Women with gout at greater risk of MI

Women with gout are at greater risk of MI than men with the disease, research shows. The population based study of more than 9,500 people with gout found that women had a 39% increased risk of acute MI and a 41% increased risk of non-fatal MI compared with women without the disease. This association was independent of age, comorbidities and use of prescription drugs. Comparatively, men with gout were at an 11% increased risk of all types of MI, the researchers reported online first in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
